Personal Profile
Dr. Jörg Thomaier became Head of IP of Bayer in 2010. He joined Bayer’s Patent Department in 1997.
Born on November 23rd, 1966 in Heidelberg, Southwest Germany, Thomaier studied Chemistry in Heidelberg, Freiburg, Utrecht (NL) and at the ETH Zurich (CH). After receiving his Ph.D. in 1996, he joined Bayer 1997 as a trainee in the Patent Department in Leverkusen. After some specific legal training he passed the so called EQE at the European Patent Office in 2001 to become a qualified European Patent Attorney.
While starting in 1997 within the CropScience group, he later served as a member of the Animal Health team and finally moved into the MaterialScience part of the Patent Department. In 2004 he took over the role as Chief Patent Counsel at Bayer Business Services GmbH establishing a Patent Department within BBS. In 2006 he transferred to Bayer Healthcare AG to become Chief Patent Counsel of said Subgroup. Finally in 2010 he again changed role and joined Bayer AG as Head of IP of the group, responsible for all IP Matters – Patents, Trademarks, Licenses and all related matters - within the Bayer Group.
In 2012 Thomaier restructured the Germany based IP Community by establishing the Bayer IP GmbH, encompassing all IP Functions in Germany. This entity also serves as a kind of a Holding entity of most of Bayer IP Assets in Germany. With the Go Live of said entity in April 2012 he additionally took on the role as the Managing Director of Bayer IP GmbH.
Jörg Thomaier is married with two children, a 21 year old son and a 18 year old daughter.
